A vehicle consists of many details - more or less important. A grille covers the car's vent to let the air in and cool the engine bay area. It is also a nice addition to the style. Normally the grillles are placed in front of the vehicle. Some are placed below the front bumper, in front of the wheels to cool the brakes, some are placed in the cowl for cabin ventilation. In rear engine vehicles grilles may be placed in the rear deck lid. The first grilles were arched. It started in 1930s and 1940s, that there appeared other designs of grilles - bell-shaped, split and slightly folded, cross-shaped. It opened a new era in car modelling. Some car manufacturing companies kept their older designs of grilles as their special trademarks till nowadays, however adding some new fashionable features to their grilles to keep up with the fashion. For example BMW with its renowned split-kidney type grille, Jeep's seven-bar grille or Rolls Royce with its vertical grille to name a few.

Most common grilles are radiator grilles which protect the radiator and the engine. The materials the grilles are usually made from are metal, plastic or fiberglass. Most OEM grilles are made from ABS plastic. The OEM grilles are often replaced by more stylish aftermarket grilles. The most popular are billet and mesh grilles. Billet grilles are most often cut or CNC machined from a billet, a solid bar of aluminum. To create a complete look, they are chromed or high-luster polished for a shining look or black powder coated to match the color and the style of the car. Mesh grilles, which are often used for supercars or high-class cars, are ususally made from the segments of the stainless steel wire, round or flat, and are put together to make a woven mesh. Depending upon the design of the mesh the quantity of cells per inch may differ. Among the most popular there are fine mesh, heavy mesh, double mesh, black ice mesh. To complete the image the mesh grilles are usually electro high luster polished, chromed or zinc plated to the brilliant finish.

The grilles do not only serve for protecting the engine compartment from the road stuff getting in and for cooling the engine, the brakes and the inside of the vehicle. They also have much to offer in style upgrade. It is an easy way to improve exterior of the vehicle. There is a number of companies producing aftermarket grilles. Some manufacture exquisite grilles for high class cars and supercars (Asanti, Lexani, Giovanna, Tiarra Grilles), some produce grilles for SUV and trucks (RBP), some grilles are completely crafted in the US (T-Rex, E&G Classics). A customer can always choose what grille suits his car best from the variety of manufacturers, designs, materials and prices.
